Achievement Test Grades K–12

i-Ready Study Guide

i-Ready is an adaptive diagnostic assessment used by over 10 million K–12 students nationwide. Published by Curriculum Associates, it precisely measures where each student is in Reading and Math — below, at, or above grade level — on a continuous scale from kindergarten through high school. Schools use results to personalize instruction, not to assign grades.

i-Ready Skill Domain Breakdown

Each domain is measured by grade band. The diagnostic places students precisely within each domain.

Reading Domains4 domains

1. Phonics & Word Recognition (primary K–3)

Letter-sound relationships, blending, sight words, and decoding multisyllabic words. This domain is the strongest predictor of early reading success.

  • Consonants, vowel patterns, digraphs, blends
  • High-frequency (sight) word fluency
  • Decoding two- and three-syllable words

2. Vocabulary (all grades)

Academic vocabulary, figurative language, and context clues. Measured across all grade levels — vocabulary growth is a strong predictor of reading comprehension gains.

  • Tier 2 academic words (analyze, compare, conclude)
  • Context clues and word relationships
  • Figurative language (idioms, metaphor, simile)

3. Literary Text (Grades 2–12)

Story elements, character analysis, theme, and inference from fiction, poetry, and narrative nonfiction.

  • Plot, character motivation, theme
  • Point of view and narrator
  • Making inferences with text evidence

4. Informational Text (Grades 2–12)

Main idea, text structure, and author's purpose from nonfiction passages including science, social studies, and current events texts.

  • Main idea and key supporting details
  • Text structure (cause-effect, compare-contrast)
  • Author's purpose and point of view
Math Domains3 domains

1. Number & Operations (~50%)

The largest math domain — covers counting, place value, operations, fractions, decimals, and ratios across grade bands.

  • K–2: counting, addition/subtraction, place value to 100
  • 3–5: multiplication/division, fractions, decimals
  • 6–8: ratios, proportions, percents, integers

2. Algebra & Algebraic Thinking (~30%)

Patterns, equations, and functions — growing in complexity from simple patterns in K–2 to linear equations and systems in middle school.

  • K–2: repeating and growing patterns
  • 3–5: expressions, equations with unknowns
  • 6–8: linear equations, graphing, functions

3. Geometry, Measurement & Data (~20%)

Shapes, spatial reasoning, measurement, data collection, and statistical analysis across grade levels.

  • 2D/3D shapes, perimeter, area, volume
  • Reading and creating graphs and tables
  • Mean, median, mode, and range (middle grades)

Prep Timeline

4-Week i-Ready Preparation Plan

i-Ready measures what students have actually learned — the best preparation is targeted skill-building at your child's current level, not test cramming.

1

Week 1

Baseline Assessment

  • Take a practice diagnostic (if available)
  • Identify weakest skill domains
  • Review prior i-Ready reports if available
  • Set target: On Grade Level or Above
2

Week 2

Reading Skills

  • Read 20 min daily at current level
  • Vocabulary: 5 new Tier 2 words/day
  • Practice inference questions from passages
  • Target identified weak reading domains
3

Week 3

Math Skills

  • Target weak Number & Operations skills
  • Algebra: practice equations at current level
  • Use i-Ready recommended lessons
  • 20 math problems daily (mixed topics)
4

Week 4

Monitor & Consolidate

  • Complete i-Ready recommended lessons
  • Review any domain still below level
  • Check growth percentile progress
  • Discuss results with teacher

Score Interpretation

Understanding i-Ready Scores

Three ways your child's i-Ready results are reported.

Scaled Score (0–800)

A continuous scale measuring growth from K through 12 on one number. Average 3rd grader ≈ 440–460 in Reading and Math. Students typically grow 15–30 points per year.

Placement Level

Most important for parents: Below/On/Above Grade Level. "On Grade Level" means your child is meeting grade-level benchmarks. "Above" means they're ready for enrichment work.

Lexile Level (Reading)

The Reading diagnostic produces a Lexile range. Use it to find appropriately challenging books. Ask your librarian to help match your child to books within their Lexile range.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is i-Ready?

i-Ready is an adaptive diagnostic assessment published by Curriculum Associates. It measures K–12 Reading and Math ability on a continuous scale, placing students below, at, or above grade level. Schools use results to plan targeted instruction.

Is i-Ready a test or a curriculum?

i-Ready is both. The diagnostic measures where students are; the i-Ready instructional platform then provides targeted lessons to close skill gaps. Many schools use both components; some only use the diagnostic.

What is a good i-Ready score?

"On Grade Level" or above is the target for most students. Above Grade Level means your child is exceeding benchmarks. i-Ready provides grade-level benchmark ranges each year — check with your school for your child's specific targets.

How often do students take i-Ready?

Most schools administer i-Ready 2–3 times per year: fall (baseline), winter (mid-year check), and spring (end-of-year growth). The fall score sets the starting point; spring shows total growth.

How is i-Ready different from MAP?

Both are adaptive assessments measuring academic achievement. MAP (NWEA) uses a RIT score scale; i-Ready uses its own scaled score. MAP is more commonly used for gifted identification; i-Ready is more often used for instructional planning and progress monitoring. Both are valid assessments.
